The last ten years have been a lot. Two degrees, a third on the way, a major move across the country, switching careers, and taking chances. I’ve worked hard to build this life, and I’m proud of that. But somewhere in all of it, I took a hit.
I gained weight from the stress. I wasn’t eating or sleeping well, and there was a point where I didn’t recognize myself.
I knew something had to change. I had to make that choice. Nobody could make it for me.
So I did.
A year and a half later, I’m 50 pounds down, and honestly, I’m still a little in awe that I’ve stuck with it. With my schedule? Bestie. That deserves a moment.
I want to celebrate what my body has been able to do for me, through all those years and everything I asked of it. And I deserve time to take care of it. I work hard. I’m allowed to have some time in my day that’s just for me.
It started with carving out fifteen minutes to walk or dancing to three of my favorite songs. That was something I could make room for, so that’s where I started.
Then I started drinking more water. Instead of eating out, we’d recreate the meal at home. Thankfully, my man is the best cook in the world, so I have a very unfair advantage there.
I also started really thinking about whether I even liked certain foods. Was I enjoying them, or was I just eating them? I wanted to make room for the ones I absolutely adored. If I’m going to eat it, I’d like to enjoy it. Seems reasonable.
Over time, things changed. I changed.
Recently, I started working with a personal trainer I love, focusing on strength training and getting stronger. It’s another way I’m investing in myself, and another reason to carve out that time in my busy schedule.
And yes, my beloved Alani Nus are still here. So are home-cooked meals, movement, and foods I love. We’re working on balance over here.
I’m not going to sit here and tell you it’s easy. Finding the time takes effort. Sticking with it takes effort. But I keep thinking about those first fifteen minutes and how much has happened since I decided to start.
If you’re looking for your first step, let it be deciding. Then find a little room in your day to follow through. A walk, three songs, something you can start with. You don’t have to figure out the next year and a half today.
I’ll be rooting for you every single day.
You’ve got this.
Softly & Slowly,
Cindy
